How It Started
From our founder, Mary Southworth:
I started working at 13, building something real from almost nothing. As my career accelerated, I found myself in rooms with executives, founders, and billionaires, earning every seat through discipline and results.
But the higher I rose, the more I watched decisions made to protect power rather than people. Some skirted legal lines. Others harmed the very employees who trusted leadership to do what was right.
Eventually, the truth was unavoidable: to keep advancing, I would have had to participate in the wrongdoing or look away.
I walked away from the world I had spent a decade working for. Leaving meant letting go of the plan, the structure, and the identity I had built from the ground up.
But I did it.
I created The Shiftly and HR Honey to use everything I learned in those rooms to challenge the systems that harm people and support the ones trying to do better.
Building something real from almost nothing. But this time, I know my power, and I'm determined to share it with a growing community that believes in the same values.
